GPhC welcomes government response to Law Commissions report on the regulation of Healthcare Professionals

Following the publication of the Government’s response to the Law Commissions’ report on the Regulation of Health Care Professionals, Duncan Rudkin, Chief Executive of the GPhC, said:

“We broadly welcome the detailed response from the government to the proposals set out by the Law Commissions in the report and draft Bill which were published in April 2014.

“We have always been clear that the interests of patients and the public should sit at the heart of any legislative reform, along with the ability for regulators to adapt and provide flexible and responsive systems that protect public safety and promote high standards in professional practice. We also believe strongly in the public and parliamentary accountability of regulators and the need for joint working across healthcare regulation. We hope that legislation which achieves those objectives will be introduced at the earliest opportunity.

“Meanwhile, we will continue to work closely with the Department on any forthcoming proposals to improve the legislative framework for pharmacy regulation, including strengthening the transparency and accountability of the pharmacy inspection process.”
