GPhC welcomes renewed approach to caring for dying people

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) today welcomed the response of the Leadership Alliance for Care for Dying People (LACDP) in England to the Neuberger report into the Liverpool Care Pathway.

In its response the Alliance sets out its approach to caring for dying people which staff in health and care organisations, including pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, should adopt in future.

Although the Neuberger report did not make any recommendations specifically relating to pharmacy professionals, a number of those recommendations were relevant and appropriate to our work and that of other regulators.

Duncan Rudkin said:

“As part of our response to the Francis report, the GPhC continues to support and take forward any action that relates to pharmacy regulation which enables the voice of patients, their families and their carers to be heard. We therefore welcome the open debate that continues to take place around the important issues of end of life care and caring for dying people.

“The GPhC agreed to be a member to ensure that the work we do as a regulator reflects respect for the needs and the wishes of patients who are nearing the end of their life.

“Through our work with the Alliance and with registrants, registered pharmacies, patients, carers and other stakeholders, we will continue to take forward this collective vision of what care for dying people should look like.”
