GPhC publicises annual report 2013-14

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) today publicised its fourth annual report 2013-14, covering its third full year in operation (April 2013 – March 2014). You can find our annual report here

Key achievements this year include:

  • Putting the focus on improving pharmacy services by raising awareness of our standards for registered pharmacies and rolling out a new prototype inspection model
  • Following the Francis Inquiry and other key reports, we have made sure there is a continued focus on patient care and compassion in pharmacy and we have improved our joint working to share information and communicate with other organisations to share feedback on risks and events appropriately
  • Making further improvements in our operational performance, including fitness to practise procedures and our registration processes
  • Developing new learning outcomes for the initial education and training of pharmacists
  • Improving how equality and diversity are built into the way we operate

The GPhC’s performance as an effective regulator was also recognised in the annual performance review carried out by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) that was published on 27th June.

In line with our commitment to further transparency, the annual report is now available as an online microsite for the first time.

Commenting on the annual report 2013-14, Duncan Rudkin said:

“Our annual report demonstrates that the GPhC has made significant progress in developing as an organisation since its creation in 2010, moving beyond our initial ‘set-up’ phase and setting out how we want to work as a regulator.

“While keeping a strong focus on our core regulatory functions, we aim to support and encourage improvement in pharmacy, as well as achieving the best results for patients and people who use pharmacy services. We remain fully committed to continuing to engage with the profession, patients and the public to ensure we deliver on our strategic objectives.”

The report also outlines the GPhC’s plans for next year:

  • Creating a patient hub on our website to help make sure patients are confident in using pharmacy care, to hear their views about what we do, and let patients share their experiences of pharmacy care to help improve it
  • Developing the Continuing Fitness to Practise (CFtP) framework for making sure that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on our register remain fit to practise and to keep patients safe
  • Reviewing our standards of conduct, ethics and performance which every pharmacist and pharmacy technician must keep to
  • Updating our contact centre call handling system as part of the improvements to our IT infrastructure
